List of the different kinds of Sushi

List of the different kinds of sushi

Maki (or makizushi)

Maki (or makizushi) is one of the most popular sushi outside of Japan. It's rice and raw fish wrapped in a nori seaweed. You can replace the raw fish with avocado or cucumber as well.

Nigiri (or nigirizushi)

Also one of the most popular sushi, it's a thin raw fish slice placed on an ovale rice ball. You can put the raw fish you want :   salmon, tuna, etc...

Temaki (or temakizushi)

Temaki is a kind of sushi that is very special. It's a nori seaweed cone with rice and other ingredients (salmon, avocado, salmon eggs...) on the inside. It's like a sandwich of rice and other ingredients. It's very big, so you have to eat it using hands, like a sandwich. It's not eaten with chopsticks.

Temari (or temarizushi)

Temari (not to mistake with Temaki, only one letter is different),  is a kind of sushi that is close to Nigirizushi. Instead of an ovale rice ball, it's a very round rice ball and quite small. On that rice ball, there is often thin salmon slices, or nori seaweed slices.

Gunkan Maki

Gunkan maki is a kind of maki (nori seaweed wrapping) with salmon eggs on the top. Salmon eggs are very delicious!  you should try it!

Inari (or inarizushi)

Inari sushi is a kind of sushi that is not very known outside of Japan. It's rice wrapped in fried tofu with soy. This is the only kind of sushi that doesn't contain raw fish or vegetables. Only rice and fried tofu.

Futomaki

This is a kind of maki, but bigger. There is many ingredients at once inside. (the rice of course, and salmon, avocado, surimi, cucumber ,  all at once inside. Because it's bigger than makizushi, so you can place many ingredients at once inside).

Sashimi

Sashimi is a kind of sushi that is made only with raw fish slices. It's basically raw fish slices on a plate. If you don't like raw fish, this is not for you!

Chirashi (or chirashizushi)

Chirashi is not really a kind of sushi, but I decided to include it in this list because it still contains raw fish. Chirashi is a large bowl of rice with slices of different raw fishes on top of the rice. There can be also some veggies (cucumber mostly) and a slice of lemon (to put lemon juice on the raw fishes). This is a very delicious dish, and since it's a very large bowl, you're sure to be full after eating that!

This is the end of the list. I hope you learned some stuffs and some kind of sushi that you didn't know before. By the way, I didn't mention California rolls, because I wanted to talk about real Japanese sushi in this list, California rolls was created by the Americans. So they're not real sushi to me.

So, what do you think?

  1. I probably prefer maki or futomaki the most, myself. :3 However, nigiri looks cutest, when made into cute characters. :P (Like this: http://orig04.deviantart.net/44c8/f/2013/038/b/e/nigiri_cute_by_nekohd12-d5u646a.png)

    Inari
    Gunkan Maki
    Temari

But now that I know those are out there I'll have to try them because they look delicious too! :)
