Here's a post to teach you how to be able to make a difference between Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai writtings. The hardest is Japanese because they use 3 writting systems at once and you have to make a difference between them as well. In japanese: Kanji are the symbols that got borrowed from China, but hiragana and katakana are typically Japanese alphabets. Hiragana is used to write grammatical particles (wa, wo, ni, no , de ... ) and some other japanese words that can't be written in kanji. Then katakana is used to write foreign words, like foreign names and some English words like CD or "Stop" or "Hotel" etc...
Let's see an example of korean, chinese, japanese and thai writting so you can make a difference by sight.
Chinese writting: 我是大学生 我中文学了两年了. 我在大学学会了中文. 我在中国当留学生. 我在中国旅游过.之所以我在学习中文是因为…我喜欢中国文化
Japanese writting:
田中さんは英語の学生です。毎日英語を習います。毎朝６時半に起きます。シャワーをあびます。そして朝ご飯を食べます。朝ご飯の後で歯をみがきます。７時半に家を出ます。
９時から１２時まで英語を勉強します。１２時に田中さんは昼ご飯を食べます。昼ご飯の後でお茶を飲みます。
２時から田中さんは英語を勉強します。５時に英語の本を読みます。６時に大学を出ます。晩ご飯を食べます。そして音楽を聞きます。田中さんは１１時に寝ます。
Korean writting:
안녕하세요나는한국을사랑함니다나는프랑스인임니다한국어를아름답다 권보아는조아함니다 한글은애교만히사랑해요 그사람은무었을봅니까
Thai writting:
บ้านของเรา ใกล้ๆกับ นิยมพานิชสันติธรรม ในซอยตรงกันข้าม นิยมพานิช (ซ.โรงแรม
อินทนิล) ตึกสีดำ รั้วระแนงไม้ ประตูไม้
ตรงกันข้ามกับวิวดอยแมนชั่น-ฝั่งเดียวกัน (จากสี่แยกแจ่งหัวลิน ตรงลงมาผ่านวัด
สันติธรรม เลี้ยวซ้ายไฟแดงแรก เข้าถนนมรกต)
As you can see, japanese and chinese writtings are a bit similar because Japanese language borrowed chinese characters (kanjis) that they "mix" in one phrase or text, along with hiragana and katakana, which are typically japanese, unlike kanjis.
As for Korean writting, you can notice the strokes are less complicated than the strokes of Chinese and Japanese, and that Korean writting contains lot of circles and rounds.
As for thai writting, it looks more like Hindi writting than chinese or japanese writting. Thai looks very different from chinese and japanese writting systems.
Now, let's see the example of a Japanese phrase which contains 3 writting systems (kanji, hiragana, katakana):
田中さんは英語の学生です。毎日英語を習います。毎朝６時半に起きます。シャワーをあびます。
Kanjis are in black color, katakana are in blue color and hiragana are in red color. As you can see, the strokes of hiragana and katakana are less difficult than the strokes of Kanjis. Hiragana are also more "curvy" than katakana which are "straight" like sticks. At first it may be difficult to make a difference between kanji, katakana and hiragana, but the more and longer time you learn Japanese, the best you can make a difference, it's all a matter of practice and learning. Hiragana and Katakana are the reason you can make difference between japanese and chinese writting, as kanjis are from chinese but hiragana and katakana got created by japanese.
